Foxboro resident completes first Deaf Motorcycle Riding Course in the Nation

Foxboro resident Wally Carlson successfully completed the nation’s first Deaf Motorcycle Riding class held this past weekend in Framingham.

Rick Sigel is the owner of Training Wheels, a motorcycle rider training school in Massachusetts with 8 locations throughout the state.  “Each year we receive a couple of requests from members of the deaf community to teach them how to ride a motorcycle.  Although we love teaching people how to ride (20,000 since 2000), we have no experience with training Deaf students.  We researched it online and couldn’t find anyone in the US that had any experience or suggestions” said Sigel.

Over the winter Training Wheels developed a program that is both consistent and effective so when a Deaf person is looking to learn how to ride a motorcycle they can be accommodated.  Together with the Massachusetts RMV, interpreter Jessica Winiecki and several Training Wheels instructors they were able to come up with a curriculum based on their most popular offering The Motorcycle Safety Foundations Basic Rider Course (BRC).

The class was marketed to the deaf community in Massachusetts and received a terrific response.  Last weekend Wally and 9 other Deaf students learned how to ride and received their motorcycle license by passing the course.

It was very exciting we look forward building upon the success of this class so that a course like this can be offered regularly.
