The trade comes as Jones was entering the final year of his contract and was scheduled to earn $7.79 million as part of a fifth-year option according to Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston.
A native of Rochester, N.Y., Jones played college football for Syracuse before entering the 2012 NFL Draft. He was drafted 21st by the Patriots in the first round.
During his four years in New England, Jones earned 211 tackles, 36 sacks, and an interception. Last season he was named to his first Pro Bowl.
Jones found himself in the middle of a controversy earlier this year prior to a playoff game against the Chiefs when it was reported that he ran to the Foxborough Public Safety building searching for medical help while acting in an unusual manner. Jones was taken to Norwood Hospital and no charges were sought against the now former Patriot.
