Drake Maye Era Set To Begin For New England On Sunday

Maye will get the start against Houston on Sunday, his first as an NFL quarterback. Here's what Jerod Mayo had to say on Wednesday.

FOXBOROUGH, MA — Jayden Daniels has been electric. Caleb Williams is coming around. Bo Nix has ... had some moments. Now, fans of the Patriots get their chance to see the team's quarterback of the future record his first NFL start.

Ian Rapoport and multiple other NFL reporters shared this week that Drake Maye will start at quarterback when the Patriots face the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Maye will replace Jacoby Brissett if and when he starts this weekend, entering a season defined thus far by inefficiencies and injuries on the offensive line.

The team ranks 31st in scoring offense and last in average passing yards per game during the last four weeks, likely signaling to decision-makers that a change was needed.

Mayo said he and the organization believed that Brissett gave the team the best chance to win up to this point, but the move to Maye this week does the same thing.

On Brissett, Mayo called him a "warrior", acknowledging the consistent punishment he took while under center during the first five weeks of the year.

Brissett, a team captain who has long had a high approval rating among the league, was "egoless" in helping Maye develop, Mayo said.

The rookie quarterback was the third overall pick coming out of North Carolina in the most recent draft, and showed flashes of his athleticism and arm talent both during the preseason and in limited action this season coming against the New York Jets.

He'll have a longer runway to display his potential now.

"Drake gives us the best chance to win now and going forward," Mayo said.

Still, questions remain about what the offense will look like for Maye, who many believe hasn't started so far this season due to the constant pressure allowed by the offensive line.

The outlook for that unit became even bleaker last week when the team placed starting center David Andrews and offensive tackle Caedan Wallace on injured reserve.

When asked about the state of the offense around him, Mayo said most teams are still trying to fine-tune its operation at this point in the season, and the Patriots are in that position.
