Foxborough Students Will Have School on Good Friday

The school committee voted to hold school on Good Friday.

Foxborough students will have an early release day on Good Friday and the new last day of school is June 24.

On Monday, the school committee voted to hold classes during the holiday on April 3, allowing the school year to end a day earlier than expected.

Due to the unusually high amount of snow days, the end of school was scheduled for June 25 before the vote.

The decision comes after a poll of 223 Foxborough teachers showed that at least 48 teachers would have conflicts if an additional snow day pushed school to June 26. When teachers were asked about potential conflicts with Good Friday, 30 teachers said there was one.

Despite the vote, the committee said it was not their intention to regularly hold classes on Good Friday, noting that the recently approved 2015-16 calendar does not have the holiday as a school day.

“We have an unusual set of circumstances. I don’t want to see this become a regular thing but in this set of circumstance, putting some valuable instructional time back into our schedule is a good thing,” committee member Tina Belanger said.

The dismissal time for the early release day will be announced by the school district at a later date but will allow for students and staff time to attend afternoon religious services.
