Game Notes: Patriots Pass Steelers in Banner Evening
A four-touchdown performance from Tom Brady helped the Patriots beat the Steelers 28-21 in the regular season opener at Gillette Stadium

On a night where the fourth Super Bowl banner was unveiled, the Dropkick Murphys announced that the boys were back (and looking for trouble), and T-Pain sang All I Do Is Win, the Patriots continue to simply win on the opening night of the 2015 NFL Regular Season.
Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and the rest of the Patriots offense picked up where they left off last season as a four-touchdown performance led the defending Super Bowl Champions past the Pittsburgh Steelers 28-21.
“I thought it was a good win for us tonight. I thought our players really competed well. Obviously Pittsburgh is a very good football team, very explosive offensively and I thought we hung in there. We made enough plays that we needed to make. It certainly wasn’t perfect, but it was good enough and we’ll take that. Certainly a lot we can learn from this game situationally and just the overall execution,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said.

For Brady, it was the usual suspects on the receiving end of his passes with Julian Edelman making 11 receptions on 12 targets for 97 yards and tight end Rob Gronkowski earning five receptions on eight targets for 94 yards and three touchdowns.
A consistent threat near the goal line, the Steelers were unable to find a solution for Gronkowski, along with fellow tight end Scott Chandler whose one reception was a one-yard touchdown catch at the one with 10:32 to play in the third quarter.

The performance was the third three-plus touchdown game for Gronkowski, which was not made more difficult by the lack of defense by the Steelers. Early in the second quarter, Gronkowski followed a 19-yard catch with a 16-yard touchdown reception down the right sideline. Open at the Pittsburgh 10, Gronkowski found himself wide open and free to pick up the game’s opening score.
“Our offense was doing a great job getting to the line. We were hustling and getting set throughout the whole offense. Tom [Brady] just saw it, made the quick throw and I just had to make the play. It was good execution overall by the offense,” Gronkowski said.
Staying open and uncovered seemed to become a theme for the New England tight end. On a second and goal at the Pittsburgh six, the Steelers seem to bite on a playaction that allowed Gronkowski to shoot up the seam between two defenders and catch his second touchdown of the game in the back of the end zone to put the Patirots up 14-0 with 4:06 remaining in the second half.
Later in the fourth quarter, Gronkowski produced a 52-yard catch that started at the Patriots 40 with no Steeler defenders around him allowed him to get New England down to the Steelers 27. Two plays later first-year Patriot running back Dion Lewis took the Patriots to the one before fumbling, with Gronkowski jumping on the what was initially ruled as a touchdown. Despite the ball being placed on the one upon review, a fade route to the left of the end zone by the tight end put New England up 14-28.
Down 21-3 at the half, Pittsburgh was able to cut the lead to seven on a field goal from Scobee and goalline run from Josh Williams during the third quarter. The Steelers’ only other score would be an 11-yard touchdown reception by Antonio Brown in the end zone with two seconds to play.
As good of a night it was for some of the Patriots it was just as bad for the Pittsburgh kicker. The acquired specialist from Jacksonville missed a 44-yard field goal on the team’s opening drive and failed to convert on a 46-yard kick in the second quarter.
The Patriots will enjoy a long week before heading to Buffalo for their Week 2 matchup with the Bills.
