Police Officer Shot on Duty to Serve as Patriots Honorary Captain

Boston Police officer John Moynihan will serve as the team's honorary captain during the season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A Boston police officer will stand with the likes of Patriots captains Tom Brady, Ryan Wendell, Nate Solder, Devin McCourty, Jerod Mayo, Rob Ninkovich and Matthew Slater before Thursday’s night Patriots game.

As part of the kickoff to the 2015 NFL season, Boston Police officer John Moynihan will serve as the team’s honorary captain during the team’s New England-themed championship ceremony prior to kickoff against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In March, Moynihan was shot in the face by a convicted felon during a traffic stop in Roxbury.

While in the hospital recovering from several surgeries, Moynihan was visited by Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who invited Moynihan to the Patriots’ 2015 season opener as his special guest and the team’s honorary captain.

In addition to Thursday night’s honor, Moynihan was recognized at the White House as one of the nation’s 53 “Top Cops” for helping to save transit officer Richard H. Donohue Jr., who was shot during a gunfight with the Boston Marathon bombers in April 2013.
