Request for More Liquor Licenses Removed From Town Meeting Warrant

The selectmen voted to remove an article that would have allowed the town to petition the state for more liquor licenses.

For the time being, Foxborough will not be asking residents to vote on whether the town should petition the state legislature for more liquor licenses.

During a discussion on the special town meeting warrant at the Oct. 7 meeting of the selectmen, the board decided to put the article on hold until the annual town meeting in the spring.

The decision came in part due to a discussion the board recently had with the planning board on how to approach the issue.

“We found out at that meeting there are a lot of dimensions to that discussion we have to look at,” selectman John Gray said. “It’s such an important issue that if we rush it though we may be walking down a road that we may regret.”

During the meeting between the two boards about two weeks ago, the planning board advised the selectmen to delay until the annual meeting to give the selectmen more time to research and craft the article.

Selectman Jim DeVellis, who also warned against rushing the article, added that the results of the recent liquor license compliance check didn’t help matters either.

“Certainly in light of the liquor license violations there is a bit of an uproar from the residents and rightfully so in terms of how many we need. If we’re going to look at it in the spring we got a lot of work to do,” DeVellis said.

With the removal of the article, seven remain on the warrant for November’s town meeting.
