FOXBOROUGH, MA — It’s been a revolutionary week for New England’s top soccer team.

On Monday, Major League Soccer, the U.S. men’s professional soccer league, announced that New England Revolution Coach Bruce Arena was named the Sigi Schmid Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

Arena has now won the prestigious award more than any other coach, MLS said. He is also the second coach to win the award for three different clubs, according to ESPN. Arena received 57.9% of the vote from MLS staff, media, and players, a healthy lead over Colorado Rapids Coach Robin Fraser, who was the runner-up and received 20.8% of the total vote.

But Arena could get one step closer to shattering another record on Tuesday: the Revolution is hosting the New York City FC at Gillette Stadium for the Eastern Conference Semifinals, which will determine if they qualify for the MLS Cup on Dec. 11. If they win, it will be Arena’s sixth MLS Cup win.

Arena took over from fired coach Brad Friedel in 2019, and he is credited with revolutionizing the Revolution and helping them achieve a stunning 2021 season. They scored 22 regular-season wins, a record 73 points, and were awarded the Supporters’ Shield in October, which is given to the best team of the season. In October, Arena became the first head coach to win four Supporters’ Shields.
