Rod Rust, Former Patriots Coach, Dies At 90

Rust ran the 1985 defense that made the Super Bowl, and in 1990 was at the helm of the 1-15 Patriots.

FOXBORO, MA — Former Patriots coach Rod Rust, remembered somewhat affectionately for being at the helm during the worst season in franchise history, died Tuesday morning, the team said. He was 90. No cause of death was given.

Rust was was the defensive coordinator for the Patriots from 1983-87, including the 1985 team that made the Super Bowl. He returned to New England as head coach in 1990, when the team went 1-15.

Rust, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was an Army veteran who coached in college and the Canadian Football League before moving to the NFL ranks.
