Braintree Route 3 Bridge Work: What To Expect This Weekend

Expect delays around the Braintree split as crews work to replace the bridge on Route 3 South.

BRAINTREE, MA — Part two of the bridge replacement project on Route 3 in Braintree is scheduled to take place this weekend.

MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver advised drivers Thursday to add extra time to their trips if they are heading towards the area this weekend and use Waze to keep up with travel times.

From 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, MassDOT crews will replace the bridge on the southbound side of the highway. Last month, a northbound bridge was installed. The 55-hour period will require detours and lane closures, Gulliver said.

Over the weekend, exit 19 on Route 3 will be closed and a detour at exit 18 will be installed. Both sides of Route 3 will have only two travel lanes instead of three. Route 93 will remain open all weekend long.

In order to accommodate construction operations, crews will implement “crossovers” so that all traffic is diverted away from these bridges and shifted onto the adjacent side of the roadway and a nearby ramp. Traffic using nearby ramps will also be detoured, and law enforcement details and variable messaging boards will be in place in order to guide drivers during these times, officials said.

The work is part of a $6.3 million project.
