State Sen. Paul Feeney's Supporters Targeted By Facebook Scammer

FOXBOROUGH, MA — State Sen. Paul Feeney, D-Foxborough, said someone made an account posing as him on Facebook to steal his supporters' Social Security and bank account numbers, as well as other personal information. According to Feeney, the scammer tried to get personal information by promising to send his supporters money.

One of those supporters, Claire Naughton of Foxborough, told the Sun Chronicle she was a target of the scam. Naughton said the scammer messaged her and at first made small talk before telling her he received $250,000 in cash and offered to give her money in exchange for personal information.

Feeney said scammers have also targeted supporters of other Massachusetts legislators in phishing scams. He took to Facebook to warn his constituents in case a scammer messages them.

"It appears to be a phishing scam where they try and get information from you with the promise of sending money," Feeney said in a statement. "The same scam has been using the likeness of other Massachusetts legislators in recent weeks as well. If you are contacted, please just click on the 'Report to Facebook' button and be sure not to give anyone your personal information.
