The Conservation Commission Explores Vernal Pools

On Saturday, May 21, the Foxborough Conservation Commission held a free program entitled, 'Exploring Vernal Pools.'

The Conservation Manager, Jane Sears Pierce, provided a slideshow of vernal pools and animals that live in them. A few of the critters featured in the slidehow were also on display at the Foxborough Recreation Building on Mill St.

Particiapants were able to walk through the woods to a nearby vernal pool after the presentation. Pierce and her husband Jim donned hip boots and went into the water with their nets to scoop out some of the living organisms for all of the participants to view up close. She also set up a microscope so that even the tiniest organisms living in the pool could be seen.

The Conservation Commission in Foxborough is a volunteer board comprised of seven members and is granted the statutory responsibility of administering the Wetlands Protection Act. The Commission manages almost 2,000 acres of land, donated or purchased for conservation and/or wetland protection purposes.
