The Trump-Patriots romance has been well-documented since before Trump ran for president. In the past, Trump has been a guest at games and has appeared in the team's locker room. That relationship got flung into the spotlight in September 2015 when a reporter spotted a "Make America Great Again" hat in Brady's locker and asked him about it, with Brady replying that a Trump win would be great. Trump went on to say that he received Brady's endorsement, but the Patriots quarterback would backtrack shortly afterward.

On the night before the election, Trump told a crowd in New Hampshire that Brady endorsed him and he read a letter of support from Belichick. The Patriots head coach defended the letter two days later, telling reporters that it was written out of friendship and not out of politics. That same day, Brady danced around questions about Trump, announcing that he was done talking about politics at his wife's request.
