WATCH: Chile Escapes Bolivia on Controversial Call
A late penalty call gave Chile the win in the Copa America showdown at Gillette Stadium.

Foxborough, MA — For a moment, it looked like Bolivia was going to escape their second Copa America game against a Chile side with a draw and a chance to make the knockout round.
One call later, Arturo Vidal was at the penalty spot thanks to a controversial handball call instead, it was an underwhelming Chile side who was doing the escaping, winning 2-1 and improving to 1-0-1 with four points. Bolivia is now 0-0-2 and is eliminated from advancing to the knockout round.
As it stands, Chile is in third place in Group D, but can move into second place depending on the result of the Argentina-Panama match.

A 1-1 game going into a stoppage time that would have at least eight minutes, Chile got their break in the eighth minute of added time when a ball deflected off of the arm Bolivian defender Luis Gutiérrez. Despite protests from Bolivia and questions whether the contact was intentional or not, Vidal’s penalty kick gave relief to the defending champions, who had lost their opener and would need help to qualify for the knockout round if they drew.
