
Francis John "Jack" Rivers, 80, a resident of Framingham for 53 years and formerly of Natick, died Monday January 10, 2011 at his home under the care of his wife Louise and Hospice.
Jack was the beloved husband of Louise (Manning) Rivers to whom he was married for 53 years.
Born in Boston and raised in Natick, he was the son of the late Frank and Grace (Hedge) Rivers. He attended St. Patrick's School in Natick, Boston College High School, class of 1947 and Holy Cross College, class of 1951.

After serving in the Navy during the Korean War, Jack earned his masters in education from the Boston University School of Education and was a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship through which he attended the Sorbonne at the University of Paris.
He was an educator and taught French and Latin in Millis and Wayland before retiring from Newton South High School.

Following retirement, Jack began writing for the Middlesex News (now the MetroWest Daily News) and was given a byline. He wrote on various subjects, some of current interest and others: "...whatever would pop into my head." His articles were brief, amusing, upbeat and appealing to many. His success in this endeavor was a source of enormous pride and gave additional meaning to his life.
Jack was a member of the Boston Humanis Association and First Parish Unitarian Universalist in Framingham.
In addition to his wife, he leaves his children: Laura Evans of Maine, Ben Rivers of Alexandria, Va., Frank "Joe" Rivers and Timothy Rivers, both of Framingham.
All are welcome to attend a memorial service to be held Saturday January 15 at 2 p.m. at First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church, 24 Vernon St., Framingham Centre, with Rev. Kathleen Hepler officiating.
A reception will follow the service at the church hall.
There are no funeral home visiting hours.
The family suggests memorial gifts be made in Jack's name to the First Parish U. U. Church at the above address.
