Celtics, TD Bank Honor Framingham Homework Center

The Youth Advisory Board of the Framingham Homework Center, and its Director Judy Gatlin, were honored at a Celtics game by TD Bank.

TD Bank, in partnership with the Boston Celtics, recognize youth from all across Massachusetts with the opportunity to attend a Celtics game. In addition to receiving a Celtics game ticket, each child receives a T-shirt, dinner, a courtside seat to watch the Celtics pregame warm-ups, a photo at center court and recognition on the CelticVision HD video screen.

The Framingham teens had their photo taken with Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell at center court, last month. They watched the Celtics battle, and eventually lose, to the Phoenix Suns. After the game, the teens had the opportunity to shoot free throws on the court.

The TD Bank Kids’ Clubhouse is a way for TD Bank to makes a difference for children in their communities.

For the third year, the Framingham Public Library Homework Center provides tutoring, homework and school project help to all high school and middle school students, who live in Framingham.

The Homework Center, run by Director Judy Gatlin, operates Mondays through Thursdays from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the main Framingham Library on Lexington Street.

The Center also sends teams of tutors to each the three public middle schools and to Framingham High one afternoon a week.

The Homework Center is funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Students or parents can make appointments to be matched with a tutor by contacting Gatlin at jgatlin@minlib.net

Students, who request help, range from honors students working to excel to those students struggling in a subject.

Students also are encouraged to drop by for academic support any day, without an appointment. Students may also use the homework center’s computers and printers for homework and projects.

A Youth Advisory Board, with representatives from each of the schools served by the Homework Center, helps Gatlin in running the Center.

The Youth Board also plans and facilitates events, that raise awareness of both the Center and academics in Framingham.

Last year, the Board organized and ran its 2nd Annual Town-Wide Middle School Spelling Bee and its first-ever Town-Wide Middle School Geography Bee.

The Board also has organized a curriculum-based scavenger hunt, warm clothing and book drives; and last year held a fund-raising fashion show to benefit the new McAuliffe Library branch fund.

The Board will have a booth at the 7th Annual Holiday Marketplace at Framingham High on Saturday selling jeweled bookmarks.
