1. Today is Independence Day of Brazil: Join us for a joyful celebration of Independence Day and Brazilian culture here in Framingham 6:30-8 p.m.! No registration required. Stop by the Main Library at 49 Lexington Street in person or view the livestream on YouTube.com/FraminghamPublicLibrary. The event will be introduced by Ambassador Benedicto Fonseca Filho, the Consul General of Brasil in Boston and will feature traditional forró music by the band Trio Let's Vamos.

2. Community Hour Moved to Wednesday out of Respect for Rosh Hashanah: All are welcome to attend Community Hour Wednesday, September 8, at 5 p.m. to learn about the best defense against COVID-19 – the vaccine. Join Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer, Chief Public Health Nurse Kitty Mahoney, and the Founder of the Framingham Coronavirus Community Outreach Group Nicole Doak to discuss City's efforts to protect as many as possible with the vaccine. Attendees will be able to pose questions during the hour via Zoom's Chat function. If you cannot attend and have questions, please email kmcfalls@framinghamma.gov with the subject line: September 8 Community Hour. Zoom information on how to join is here. A video recording of the Zoom will be available following for those who cannot attend.

3. City Offering Rapid COVID-19 Tests to Residents: Framingham is offering BinaxNOW rapid COVID-19 tests to residents at City's Public Health Nursing Clinic. If you have health insurance, please bring your insurance card with you. Face coverings/masks are required to be worn at all times in the clinic. Appointment hours for COVID-19 testing at the clinic are Monday-Wednesday: 2-3:30 p.m. To schedule a COVID-19 testing appointment, please call (508) 532-5667.

4. Next Framingham Reads Together Series Kicks off Thursday (September 9): Join us for this unique multigenerational experience concerning an issue that touches all our lives. Framingham Reads Together is a shared community experience around one book, Dear Martin, and will culminate in a conversation with the author herself, Nic Stone. This is our sixth “one book, one community” initiative. For more information and to register, go here. Framingham Reads Together is an initiative of Framingham Public Library, City of Framingham, Framingham School Department, and Framingham State University.  

5. City Receives $269,030 Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Grant: The Baker-Polito Administration announced last week that Framingham received a $269,030 Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness Grant to support the Walnut Street Neighborhood Flood Mitigation Project. Funds will assist project design and permitting costs to reduce flooding and increase brook capacity in the Walnut Street/Sucker Brook Drainage Area. A new boardwalk path will be designed to replace the existing school path, reconnecting residential neighborhoods between Walnut Street and Stonybrook Road. Once installed, residential areas will be able to use the boardwalk to access Bowditch Athletic Field, the Callahan Senior Center, Fuller Middle School, McCarthy Elementary School, and MassBay Community College. Funds will also be used to support enrichment programs with the Framingham High School Environmental Club, Hoops & Homework Program, and the Council on Aging.
