*Media Alert* New Public Parking Area and Pedestrian Improvements for the Cochituate Rail Trail; Framingham Residents Now Have an Area to Park When Accessing the Trail

Framingham, MA – The City of Framingham’s Department of Public Works is pleased to announce that a new public parking area, located on Speen Street, for the Cochituate Rail Trail will open today, Wednesday, November 10. The newly installed parking area was previously home to the City’s second-largest wastewater pumping station, known as the Speen Street Pump Station, up until 2012. First, the existing pump station building was demolished, and site restoration was conducted. Once the site work was completed, a new crosswalk and two rectangular rapid-flashing beacons were installed to accommodate pedestrian crossing.  “Although this area is limited in size, due to being located close to wetlands, the need for public parking in Framingham for the Rail Trail was paramount regardless of the number of spots we could accommodate,” said William Sedewitz, Acting Director of Public Works.  “The opening of this parking area comes at a perfect time, as the newest section of the Rail Trail officially opened a short time ago,” exclaimed Mayor Yvonne M. Spicer. “New parking will further encourage residents to explore this wonderful amenity that promotes healthy living and brings our community together.”  The parking area, consisting of four parking spots, one being handicap accessible, will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis.
