Finding Text Evidence & Summarizing
Reading comprehension is more than just finding the “right answer.” Strong readers learn how to identify the author’s main idea, select important details, and explain how the evidence supports their thinking.
One skill students need across elementary, middle, and high school is learning how to answer:
✅ What is the author mostly explaining?
✅ Which details support the main idea?
✅ How can I summarize this information in my own words?
Try this strategy with your child:
🔎 1. Find the Main Idea
Ask: “What is the author’s biggest message?”
📖 2. Find Key Details
Look for facts, examples, or explanations that support that message.
✏️ 3. Evaluate the Evidence
Not every sentence is equally important. Strong readers choose details that actually prove the main idea.
📝 4. Summarize
Challenge your child to explain the passage in fewer words while keeping the most important information.
