Mary Shelley was only 18 years old when she began writing what would become Frankenstein. The idea was sparked during a summer spent with fellow writers, when they challenged one another to write a ghost story.

Mary struggled at first to come up with an idea.

Then, she had a thought:

What if a scientist could create life?

That single idea became one of the most famous novels in literary history.

💡 This is a powerful lesson for young writers:
You don’t have to begin with a perfect story.

Sometimes, you just need a prompt, a challenge, and the freedom to imagine.

Try a “Frankenstein Challenge” with your child!

Give your child a simple prompt:

“What if…”

Then let their imagination take over.

What if your pet could talk?
What if you discovered a secret door?
What if you woke up in a world where everyone could fly?
What if an ordinary object came to life?

Encourage your child to take that one idea and develop it into a story with characters, a setting, a problem, and a sequence of events.

The goal isn’t to write the perfect story.

The goal is to wonder, imagine, create, and write. ✨
