Ex-Treasurer Gets Two Years for Embezzling $175k From Framingham Soccer Club

Vermilya, a volunteer for the non-profit, issued checks to cover shortfalls in a Cambridge real estate management business

CAMBRIDGE, MA - The former treasurer of the Framingham United Soccer Club was sentenced to two years in prison for embezzling over $175,000 from the organization, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.

Scott Vermilya, 43, of Framingham, pled guilty Thursday in Middlesex Superior Court to four counts of fiduciary embezzlement, five counts of larceny over $250, and false entry into corporate books. He was sentenced to serve two years in the Billerica House of Correction followed by three years probation. He was also ordered to pay approximately $176,000 restitution.

A statement from Ryan's office says that Vermilya, a volunteer for the non-profit since January 2014, issued checks to "cover shortfalls in his real estate management business", and that he used the soccer club debit card for personal expenses.

The shortfalls Vermilya was trying to cover were for Cambridge company ReMax/Destiny, which he had worked at since May 2012. He would commingle funds and move money between accounts without a "realistic" plan of replacing it, the statement said.

“This case is a reminder that all businesses and non-profits should carefully monitor their financial transactions and remain vigilant in examining company funds. If something seems amiss, stop activity in the account and seek an accounting of the transactions,” said Ryan.
