Upon arrival, officers observed that Canterbury Street was blocked off with over 100 cars. Officers began to run down Canterbury Street to locate the officer and, as they did, the group of people began to run towards cars in the area.
The DYS Corrections Officer stated that he was leaving work and was blocked in by multiple vehicles. One of the cars side-swiped his and tried to drive away, police said.
"At that time, people began to surround his truck and bash on the windows," police said. "Once officers arrived on scene, the crowd began to disperse. The officer was not injured and declined medical attention. The officer was able to exchange paperwork with the operator of the other involved vehicle."
Officers observed one of the suspects enter a car that did not have a front license plate.
They approached the car and requested the suspect’s license and registration. The suspect placed his hand on the gear shifter and refused to identify himself, police said. After refusing to identify himself a second time, the suspect shifted the vehicle into reverse before quickly driving away, almost striking officers, police said.
"Due to heavy traffic in the area, officers pursued the vehicle on foot, and demanded the operator to exit the vehicle. The suspect refused to exit the vehicle, and began to reach towards a bag near the center console. Officers drew their department issued firearms and ordered the suspect and passengers to not move," police said.
Officers were able to remove all the occupants from the vehicle and placed them into handcuffs. Officers immediately conducted a pat frisk of the vehicle and recovered a firearm. They then conducted a motor vehicle inventory search and recovered three different license plates and three different key fobs.
As responding officers were attempting to disperse the crowd, they observed a car parked off the road with the rear backed into bushes. Officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the occupants.
Officers requested the operator’s license but he was unable to produce any identification, police said. Two occupants then provided officers with false names.
After further investigation, officers requested the occupants to exit the vehicle. Officers conducted a pat frisk and recovered a firearm from inside the vehicle.
Officers conducted an inquiry of the vehicle’s registration which revealed that it was stolen. Officers also recovered two stolen license plates inside the vehicle.
