Framingham State Program Features Famed Authors & Film Screenings

Framingham State University announces its 2014-15 Arts & Ideas Program - many of the programs are free and open to the public

Framingham State University announced its 2014-15 Arts & Ideas Program lineup, which kicks off with a special Arts & Ideas Week Sept 15-19.

The program is highlighted this year by the “And Justice for All” series, which will feature lectures, film screenings and performances examining justice in America and around the world.

Highlights include a discussion with Julie Otsuka on Oct. 9 book When the Emperor was Divine, which is the University’s Common Reading Selection and details life in Japanese Internment camps in the U.S. during World War II.

Framingham State University will also host former Rolling Stone reporter Matt Taibbi on Nov. 20, who will discuss his new book The Divide: American Injustice in the Age of the Wealth Gap.

The theme of this year’s President’s Distinguished Lecture Series is “A Republic of Learners: Education as the Equalizer of the Human Condition,” and ties into the University’s 175th anniversary.

* Internationally renowned author and winner of the National Humanities Medal Richard Rodriguez will speak on Sept. 15

* Yale University Professor and author of The Heathen School John Demos will speak on Sept. 24.

* National Book Award Winner and Author of Savage Inequalities Jonathan Kozol will speak on Oct. 14.

The University is kicking off the series with a special Arts & Ideas Week Sept. 15-19, which will feature six events, highlighted by a lecture from Richard Rodriguez on Sept. 15th, a Sufi music performance by Chaar Yaar on Sept. 16 and a film screening by Irish filmmaker Maurice Fitzpatrick on Sept. 17.

Other highlights of the series include the Lifelong Learning Series, run in partnership with Framingham Public Library, the International Film Series, Diversity and Inclusion Events, Mazmanian Gallery Exhibitions and the Authors and Artists Series.
