Second Racist Incident At Framingham State In One Month

The university has planned a forum for students and staff to discuss race and preventing hate speech in reaction to the recent incident.

FRAMINGHAM, MA- A racist note targeting hispanics was slipped under a Framingham State University Student's dorm door on Wednesday afternoon. The university planned a forum for Monday in response to the incident.

The student lives in the Towers Hall residence hall and called campus police when she found the note, which was written on a napkin. The university could not give details about what was written on the note or about the targeted student. Campus police are actively investigating the incident, reviewing surveillance footage from the dorms and interviewing students, according to Dan Magazu, a spokesman for the university. Magazu added that there is footage of the hallway where the targeted student lives but none of the cameras capture her door. The student was offered to move dorm rooms and counseling services.

Monday's forum is meant to be an open dialogue between students and staff about how to stop acts of hatred on campus and what the school can do to support students. "It's important that we let everyone know that we reject this type of hateful behavior," Magazu said.

This is not the first time Framingham State University has had an issue with hate speech on campus. On Feb. 1 a racially charged message was written on the bathroom wall at the Horace Mann residence Hall and last year a Black Student Union flyer was defaced with a racial slur. Magazu said since the Feb. 1 incident the school has taken strides to retrain faculty and staff about anti-bias and made it a point to hold campus wide discussions about race. Magazu said this year the university added a mandatory anti-bias and sensitivity training for all new and incoming students.

This latest incident of hate speech comes just days after the university announced this year's commencement speaker will be Rep. John Lewis, Georgia congressman and famed Civil Rights Movement leader.
