FRAMINGHAM, MA — City liquor store Union Big Mart on Union Avenue was the latest business caught selling alcohol to a minor in a recent round of compliance checks. The store will not be able to sell alcohol for five days. It was the third violation for the store in 12 years, officials said.

"What can I say, they apologize," said Arthur Pearlman, a lawyer representing Union Big Mart, as he addressed the Board of License Commissioners at a Monday meeting. An employee at Union Big Mart sold a 12-pack of beer to an 18-year-old without asking for identification on Nov. 5, police said. The teen was working with police on the recent round of compliance checks.

The Board of License Commissioners ordered a nine-day suspension, with the business serving five days during a period that runs Monday through Friday, and four days held in abeyance. On top of the suspension, the store has to pay a $300 investigation fee to the city.

According to Pearlman, the employee who sold the alcohol has been retrained and a new policy has been put in place in the store that all customers buying alcohol or cigarettes will have to show identification.

Union Big Mart must serve the suspension within 30 days of Monday’s hearing.
