That's right everyone the pre-fab four better known as the Monkees a manufactured band put together originally for television who even topped the charts in the sixties while the television show ran from 1966 - 1968 and sold millions of records then had gone and created this cult classic movie entitled "Head" and was released on November 6, 1968. The movie was directed by Bob Rafelson one of the two men who created the television show for the Monkees, and the movie was produced and written by Bob Rafelson and a young and upcoming movie actor by the name of Jack Nicholson and writers of this cult cilm. While this movie is yes 50 years old it never really got a big welcome to the film critics, and even Monkee fans of the time. It's really a film piece to this writer that was just a little ahead of it's time, because it didn't have one solid plotline to the story there were multiple plots as it had all the different film genres in one you had war, western, comedy, drama, romance, action and many more themes in one film which the world wasn't quite ready for at the time. Columbia pictures was the film distributor at the time where as Screengems was the distributor of the television show. The film budget was $750,000.00 for which at the time was probably a big budget like some of the blockbuster films of today which are generally somewhere in the millions for a budget and the movie only grossed $16,111.00 which is not even a tenth of the budget it took to make it at the box office, now it's probably made the budget and then some back considering the formats of video it has been released on since the original release of the film it's been released in all the different video formats you can imagine including beta, VHS, DVD, laserdisc, and of course now BLU-Ray. Quite honestly this film should have grossed more than it did with all the stars that were in the movie including Victor Mature, Annette Funicello, boxing champion Sonny Liston, Frank Zappa, and a young upcoming actress by the name Terri Garr, along with Jack Nicholson writing and producing he would also be in the film with his friend Dennis Hopper, the original cut of the film was 110 minutes when it was shown to a test crowd it didn't do well so they cut it down to 86 minutes, sure would love to see the missing 24 minutes that got cut.
This year in honor of the 50th anniversary the movie is being shown in selected theaters for a limited run mostly so far in the state of California where Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith of the Monkees themselves come to the screening and do a question and answer session after the film has run. If you're like me and can't get to one of those screenings because you don't live anywhere near where it's being shown you can always find it online somewhere to watch like youtube, or even purchase it from amazon for a reasonable price and sit down and watch it for your first time or if you're a fan watch it again.
Ed Wrobleski host/producer of the podcast Talking Hendrix has done a 50th anniversary tribute to the flick and has some interviews you've probably either never heard or haven't heard them in a long time along with music from the movie including the Carole King penned tracks "The Porpoise SOng (theme to the movie)" and "As We Go Along" both having vocals done by drummer Micky Dolenz who's voice still sounds the same as it did when he recorded all of the original Monkee
tracks, and then of course we have the Michael Nesmith penned tune "Circle Sky" which when watching the film you see the Monkees performing this song live but on the album we get a studio version, let's not forget the two Peter Tork pieces contributed to the album "Can You Dig It" which Micky Dolenz takes the lead vocals on this one and then "Long Title: Do I Have To Do This All Over Again" with Tork on the lead vocals and the second rockin' track on the album and we can not forget Davy Jones who we unfortunately lost back in 2012 due to a heartattack his classic song and dance tune "Daddy's
SOng" written by Harry Nilsson and in the film you get to see Davy do his dance piece with upcoming singer in the 80s Toni Basil long before her classic hit "Mickey".

Please take the time to listen to this special i've put together on the movie and interviews and to close out the show we did a live concert performance of all the songs from the movie. I hope in another 50 years someone will watch this movie and see the talent there actually was in this cult classic. Happy 50th Anniversary Head and the Monkees.
