More Local Rallies Planned On Jan. 6 Capitol Riot Anniversary

From Weston to Worcester, residents in local cities and towns will gather to remember the U.S. Capitol incident that happened Jan. 6, 2021.

The U.S. Capitol Building is closed to the public this year during Independence Day celebrations on July 4, 2021 in Washington, DC. The fencing remains after the Jan. 6th insurrection by pro-Trump supporters.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — Local residents will mark the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot with candlelight vigils. There are at least seven rallies planned nearby, including in Framingham, Worcester, Sudbury, Stow, Weston and Brookfield.

Supporters of former president Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol one year ago as members of Congress were voting to certify the election of President Joe Biden. Hundreds of people have been arrests and prosecuted since, including residents from Natick, Seekonk, Somerville and Malden.

"Americans across race, place, party, and background are holding candlelight vigils to say: In America, the voters decide the outcome of elections," a Massachusetts Standing Up for Racial Justice press release said of the Framingham event. "To prevent this kind of attack from happening again, advocates are demanding that elected leaders pass urgent legislation including the Freedom to Vote Act, the Protecting Our Democracy Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and DC Statehood."
