Framingham Superintendent of Schools Stacy Scott and his administration is still talking with staff, the Framingham Teachers Association, parents, and other stakeholders on how to make up the seven snow days the public school district has had thus far.

The 2014-15 school calendar, as voted on by the elected Framingham School Committee, has the 185th day as Wednesday, June 24; and notes than any days after the 185th day could be taken from April vacation.

If no days are taken from April vacation, the last day of school based on the 7 snow days called as of Feb. 13, would be Friday, June 26.

If any changes to the calendar are made, they will need to be voted on by the 7-member School Committee. The Committee’s next meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 24.

The following is a press release on Scott’s thoughts about making up those snow days.:

“Thank you for your support and patience as we have dealt with the recent historic storms. With the support of the Town efficiently clearing our streets, sidewalks and schools, we have managed to keep students safe during the storms. We have experienced seven snow days thus far and must make a plan in the event that we have more in the days to come.

A variety of concerns have surfaced about how to deal with replacing the snow days. Concerns have been raised about impact of changes in the calendar on summer camps, college visits, professional development, family vacation plans, preparation for Advanced Placement tests and many more. Also, we must consider the discomfort of working in hot classrooms late in June. We will certainly weigh all of these concerns as we plan for make-up days.

Some solutions are not viable.

Half days cannot be used to make up for snow days.

There are no more professional development days to swap for lost days.

Adding hours to the school days does not meet the requirements.

As we devise a plan, we will likely use 25th and 26th of June to make up snow days. If other days are needed we will consider your preferences as we make that plan.

When you return we will have a survey for you to fill out to indicate your preferences for making up additional snow days.”
