Unsafe Blue-Green Algae Bloom At Lake Cochituate

The Framingham Health Department is cautioning people and pets to stay away from the water.

FRAMINGHAM, MA — The Framingham Health Department has detected dangerous levels of blue-green algae in Lake Cochituate, and is warning local residents to steer clear of the water.

Blue-green algae, also called cyanobacteria, typically blooms during warm weather. The pea-soup looking blooms can irritate the skin, and can do internal damage to humans and pets if inhaled or swallowed. In rare cases, cyanobacteria can cause organ failure and death.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation confirmed cyanobacteria sightings recently in the North Pond area, including near Saxonville Beach.
