VIDEOS and SLIDESHOW: Campers Learn About Firefighting

Framingham youths enrolled in the Middlesex Sheriff's Youth Public Safety Academy spent Wednesday afternoon at Framingham Fire headquarters.

As Framingham firefighters broke the glass of a vehicle, dozens of young campers watched and screamed.

These Framingham youths were learning what it is like to be a firefighter and what happens when an individual is trapped in a vehicle after a crash.

The youths, ages 9-11, were part of the Middlesex Sheriff’s Youth Public Safety Academy.

The is the 16th year of the camp, and the fifth year under Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian.

The camp is available for just one week for Framingham residents.

Friday, the Framingham campers, along with campers from Natick, Ashland, and Marlborough will participate in a graduation ceremony in Billerica with a BBQ.

During the week, the campers learned safety and cyber-safe techniques and yesterday toured their local police and fire departments.

Wednesday at the fire station, the campers watched a demonstration by the heavy rescue team cutting open a vehicle to rescue one of their camp counselors inside.

As Framingham Fire Captain Michael Dutcher explained to the campers what is involved in an extrication on the scene of a crash and answered youths questions, while the other firefighters turned a vehicle into a convertible.

Afterwards, they toured the Framingham Fire HQ station and then learned how to use a fire hose.

What next on a hot July day?

The campers cooled off as firefighters sprayed them with the hose.
