Fears often keep would-be kayakers on dry land, said Jeff LeClaire, manager of Fin and Feather Sports Shop in Upton.
He said he often hears of people being nervous to try kayaking because of a fear of being “stuck in the kayak” or worries that the” kayak may tip over and the passenger would be unable to become upright again.”
But kayaks today are adjustable, providing a proper fit for each passenger and allowing for someone to fall away from the cockpit, ensuring they would not be stuck, he said.

So there is no excuse not to paddle into some summer fun.
Starting Wednesday, June 29, the and Fin and Feather Sports Shop will offer three kayaking clinics for residents ages 9 and older. These small classes, with 12 people maximum, are intended to address common fears about kayaking, LeClaire said.

Ninety-minute kayaking clinics will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays June 29, July 27 and Aug. 31.
The first half of each class will be dedicated to teaching participants the proper way to get in and out of a kayak, the correct use of a life jacket and the different parts of a kayak.
Once participants are in the water, the last 45 minutes will be used to teach paddling techniques, water safety and how to handle an emergency.
Grafton Recreation and Fin and Feather Sports have been participating in these clinics for about 12 years, LeClaire said.
With the Quinsigamond and Blackstone rivers, Silver Lake and Lake Ripple within the town’s boundaries, there is a great opportunity and a growing desire and interest for these types of water sports, he said.
A limited number of double kayaks are also available. Each 90- minute lesson is $50 per person.
