Generals Sports Roundup: 'Outstanding Performance' by Girls' Cross-Country

Girls’ cross-country:
Kerry Phelan was tops to lead the Generals girls’ cross-country team to a win in the Cape Ann League Open on Saturday. Coach Steve Sawyer said it was Phelan’s best race of the year.

The Generals topped the field of 11 teams with an impressive four runners in the top 10. Hamilton-Wenham ended with just 34 points, more than half the points – 76 – tallied by second place finisher Masconomet.
Joining Phelan (1rst, 18:46) in scoring for the Generals was Emily Weigand (5, 19:29), Claire Pacione (7, 19:32), Meg Blatchford (10, 19:46) and Emily Horgan (11, 19:57).

Sawyer said Phelan, Weigand, Pacione, Blatchford and Horgan plus Emily Senning (12, 20:01) and Sarah Duffy (14, 20:10) all had “outstanding performances.”
Saturday’s win came after the team won the Cape Ann League regular season title for the seventh straight year. Next up is the division meet at Franklin Park in Boston on Nov. 12.
Boys’ cross-country:
The boys’ cross-country team finished fourth in a field of 12 teams at Saturday’s Cape Ann League Open at Bradley Palmer State Park. The Generals were 97 points behind winner Newburyport.
Matt Gillis led the scoring for Hamilton-Wenham, finishing 15th in 17:31. Other Generals scorers included Dan von Staats (23, 17:56), Michael Allara (25, 17:59), Jack Blatchford (28, 18:04), Kevin Rutigliano (33, 18:13).
The team next runs at the division meet at Franklin Park in Boston on Nov. 12.
Girls’ soccer:
Lynnfield, 3; Hamilton-Wenham, 1.
The Generals girls’ soccer team (4-9-3) lost to Lynnfield at home on Saturday. Alana Vecchiarello had the goal for Hamilton-Wenham.
