The crash initially closed Route 1 in both directions on Saturday. As of 2 p.m. on Sunday, two of the three lanes in both directions in the area of the crash – next the Essex Street exit – were open.

Traffic was moving slowly with a “moderate backup” as of midday Sunday. The road had been repaved and repairs to the guardrail continued. Police said “all efforts” were being made to have all three lanes in both directions open for the Monday morning commute.
