LA TRAVIATA
Opera comes to Gloucester. On Sunday 8/14 at 10 a.m. and Thursday 8/18 at 7 p.m., La Traviata will be on the big screen at Gloucester Cinema, 74 Essex Ave. For just under two hours, anyone who loves or is just curious about opera will enjoy Verdi’s masterpiece, which contains many recognizable tunes. Staged by the English National Opera with English subtitles, you won’t miss a beat as La Traviata tells the moving story of the beautiful but fragile courtesan Violetta as she is coerced into sacrificing her one hope of personal happiness for the sake of her lover’s reputation. Peter Konwitschny’s celebrated production cuts to the very heart of the opera’s themes of passionate love and tragic death with a modern and uncluttered staging.
