Man Injured When Payphone Falls on Him

A man talking on a payphone next to the MBTA station in Wenham received minor injuries when the phone fell on him Thursday.

A man received minor injuries when the phone he was talking on fell on top of him Thursday afternoon.

It happened at about 3:30 p.m. next to the platform at the in Wenham. The station, although it’s at the rear of the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing, is technically in Wenham.

Lyons Ambulance took the man, whose name was not immediately available, to Beverly Hospital to be checked out, said Wenham Police Sgt. Jeff Tobey.

Police had the area around the fallen pay phone cordoned off and were waiting for officials from Verizon, which owns the payphone, and the MBTA, to respond at about 4:15 p.m.

The base of the phone appeared to be badly rusted, but it wasn’t immediately known what caused the payphone to fall.
