Runaway Teens Found Near 'Occupy Newark' on Monday

The runaway teenagers who left Wenham early Sunday morning by hailing a cab to South Station in Boston were found safe in Newark, N.J. on Monday.

The runaway teenage couple who hailed a cab from Wenham early Sunday morning were found safe on Monday near the “Occupy Newark” encampment in New Jersey, Wenham police announced on Monday night.

Officer Shane Kavanaugh said in a news release that both Connor Southhard, 13 and Laura Dixon, 14, were found safe and sound.

“We have been made aware by New Jersey officials that they are in good health and their well-being is assured,” police said in Monday night’s announcement

Police have notified both Dixon and Southhard’s parents that they have been found safe.

Exactly how the pair, who were described by police on Sunday as boyfriend-girlfriend, got to New Jersey remains under investigation, Kavanaugh said in Monday’s news release. The pair took a taxicab from on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. and arrived at South Station in Boston just before 2 a.m.

In surveillance video released by the MBTA transit police on Monday, the couple is seen arriving at South Station and going to one door and then turning to head to another door after arriving at the train and bus station.

Wenham Police Chief Ken Walsh told WBZ-TV on Sunday that the pair left with about $300 and spent $66 on the taxi ride.

An Amtrak train to Newark can cost as little as $70 per person, and low cost bus carriers such as Megabus makes trip from South Station to New York City for as little as $10.

Wenham police credited the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which sent a representative from “Team Adam” to the Wenham Police Department for the entire time the couple was gone, for help in the search.

Police also said that news about the runaways generated “a large response from the public.”

The Massachusetts State Police and the also assisted in the case.
