Shouting In North Shore Waters Was Fishermen: Police

A search for a possible missing person in the Newburyport and Salisbury area ended when two fishermen contacted the Coast Guard.

NEWBURYPORT, MA – A search for a possible missing person in the water off of Salisbury and Newburyport was suspended Wednesday after two fishermen contacted the Coast Guard to tell them they had been yelling to each other on the water Tuesday night, according to CBS Boston.

The Coast Guard and local police were searching the Black Rock Creek area near the entrance to the Merrimack River after a person reported hearing cries for help to Salisbury police.

Responding officers also heard what appeared to be calls for help from the shore, reports say.

The fishermen were in kayaks about half-a-mile apart and shouting to each other. When they saw news reports about the search, they called the Coast Guard. A search of the area came up empty, and the Coast Guard believes the fishermen were what was thought to be "cries for help," CBS Boston reported.

No one was reported missing.
