VIDEO: Boys' Lacrosse Falls in First Big CAL Matchup

The Generals' offense couldn't heat up at Masconomet on Friday afternoon, while the home team piled it on in a 13-3 loss for Hamilton-Wenham.

The boys’ lacrosse team took to the field against Masconomet looking to improve to 2-0 after starting the 2011 season with a 9-1 win over Pentucket.

The home team would have none of that, racing out to a 7-0 lead before Sam Martinez got the Generals on the board at 3:14 of the second quarter. Trevor Lyons picked up an assist on the play, but Masco’s Wes Shrewsbury restored the seven goal lead only 21 seconds later.

Coach Jim LaSelva implored his team to “keep their heads on a swivel,” to keep an eye out for attacking Chieftains, but Masco never let up the attack, pushing the lead to 10-1 before Christian Valletti buried the second Hamilton-Wenham goal with 1:42 left in the third quarter.

“Masco’s got some good players, some big players,” LaSelva said. “They just kept up a strong attack, and took it to us pretty good.”

Hamilton-Wenham actually controlled the play for the first few minutes, Eliot Burr and Valletti forcing the issue in the Masconomet zone with big hits and quick passes.

Masco withstood the early push by the visitors and cranked up the attack. Strong play in net from Luke Drieze kept the Chieftains from blowing out the Generals in the first quarter. Masconomet shooters also hit the goalposts six times during the course of the game as their offense was red-hot while Hamilton-Wenham’s offense was just a bit off-target all game.

Martinez scored his second goal of the game with 8:23 to play, but Tim Towler and Conor Brown answered for Masconomet accounting for the 13-3 final.

“They did a good job against us,” LaSelva said. “They made it very difficult for us to execute our game plan.”

“We played well and it’s great to get out first Cape Ann League win after dropping the opener to B.C. High,” Masconomet coach Tom Cobb said after the game.

Masconomet and Hamilton-Wenham both left the field Friday afternoon with 1-1 records on the young season. Up next, the Generals , with game time set for 4:30 p.m.
