10 Interesting Election Facts About Hingham

1. Hingham saw an 83.4 percent voter turnout for this 2012 Election.  Although hundreds of people came to the polls on Tuesday, it still did not exceed the town’s  85 percent turnout for the 2008 Obama/McCain Election.  A total of 14,178 Hingham residents filled out a ballot on Tuesday.   That’s a strong turnout when you consider the fact that 22,157 people live in town, according to the 2010 consensus.

2. The majority of Hingham precincts voted Mitt Romney for president.  Romney won in five out of the seven Hingham Precincts The only precincts that voted Obama were  Precincts 1 and 5A.

3. Hingham did not vote like the rest of the state.  Scott Brown won in six out of seven Hingham Precincts.  The only precinct that selected the Elizabeth Warren was 5A at Linden Ponds.

4. Speaking of Linden Ponds... an impressive 91 percent of registered voters at the senior living community voted on Tuesday.

5. The top vote-getter in Hingham was State Senator Bob Hedlund who received 9,608 votes; That’s more votes than Obama, Romney, Brown and Warren each received in Hingham. The candidate who received the fewest votes in Hingham was Green Party Presidential Candidate Jill Stein with  only 44 votes.  The Question that received the most votes was YES on Question 1 (Right to Repair) which received 10,897 votes.

6. Hingham voted the same way as the rest of Massachusetts by voting yes on Questions 1 and 3 and No on Question 2.  Like the rest of the state, Hingham was nearly split on Question 2 (Death with Dignity).      NO on #2 won in every Hingham precinct except Precincts 1 and 3 by no more than 250 votes in each precinct.

7.  Hingham is now part of the new 8^th Congressional District.  Last night all seven Hingham precincts voted in favor of Stephen Lynch.

8. Former Hingham High School graduate Robert Hedlund was re-elected as State Senator for a tenth term.  He was victorious across all eight Plymouth Norfolk towns as well as all seven Hingham precincts.  Hedlund is only one of four Republican State Senators in Massachusetts.

9. While  State Rep. Garrett Bradley will continue to represents most of Hingham by running unopposed on Tuesday, James Murphy (D-Weymouth) will now represent Precinct 2.  Murphy is from Weymouth and received 61 percent of the vote in Hingham on Tuesday.

10. In Hingham, there were 33 write ins for President, 11 of them came from Precinct 6, none came from Precinct 5A.  A total of 29 voters left the presidential race blank.  The category that received the most blanks was the County Commissioner (14013 blanks). Daniel A. Pallotta received the most votes (5,372) in that category.
