Bites Nearby: Muang Thai
Bites Nearby is a weekly column by Patch's resident foodie, Christine Cassis, investigating the best dishes in and around Hingham, Mass.
Whether you’re in the mood for Thai or just something a bit more creative, is about as exotic as you can get without leaving Hingham. You’ve probably gone right past this palace of goodness more than a few times, a rookie mistake, because this place should definitely be on your radar.
Muang Thai has an extensive menu, but not an expensive one. In fact almost all dishes under $15 and each of the rice and noodle dishes are under $10. Whether you’re looking for something exotic, specifically duck, cuisine with an Asian flare, or maybe vegetarian options, Muang has it all. Not to mention, even the pickiest of eaters here can find a simple rice or chicken dish. Plus, there are icons on the menu to notify you if a dish is spicy. It’s almost impossible to go wrong, even if you are new to Thai.
Some favorites? Let’s start with the appetizers. Spring rolls (both veggie and Thia) are fresh and delicious. The dumplings can be fried or steamed, both served with a wonderful ginger sauce. Of course there are staples such as crab Rangoon and chicken wings done in a traditional Thai sauce, and even boring friends can find chicken tenders (Siam- style, tempura battered with a sweet and sour sauce) to satisfy their craving. Can’t decide because everything sounds delicious? Get an assorted platter for just $16.

Muang’s not kidding around when it deems a dish a “house specialty.” The Excited Chicken seems simple enough, (sautéed chicken and veggies with a brown sauce) but is perfect with its kick of spice. Among other favorites in this category: Siam Mango (sliced mango with both chicken and shrimp in a yellow curry sauce), Chili Duck (a half duck done crispy with chili sauce, mixed veggies and cashews) and even a soft-shell crab dish that is delectable, but best when in-season.
The noodle and rice dishes are probably my favorite, with staples done right with Pad Thai, Pineapple Fried Rice and even a Spicy Fried Rice. But none of them outshines the Crazy Noodle. Warning: I have a love for heat. This dish features pan-fried noodles with string beans and chicken, basil and a hot chili sauce.

For those who can’t decide, there’s a mix-and-match section where you are able to choose from your favorite sauce and meats, and pair them perfectly with your palate. Vegetarians, you know how important a good tofu and fresh veggies can be for your dish. Trust me here, you won’t be disappointed. Plus, with eight options (among them a staples like Pad Thai, curry and fried rice) you have plenty to choose from.
And last but not least: Curry. While I have to admit I’ve never tried the curry here, I only hear good things about the many options available. Each of them is traditional Thai in that it is coconut-based, which is important if that’s something that doesn’t tantalize your taste buds.
Either way you go, spicy basil or refreshing coconut, you can’t go wrong here. Grab a Thai-Iced Tea if you’re going for a spicy dish, it’ll help cool things down, and make sure to consider Muang Thai for takeout, too. The restaurant is located in Hingham Square at 74A North Street in Hingham, so don’t miss it!
