Is damage caused by an earthquake covered?

A brief note about homeowner's insurance coverage for earthquake related damage.

After the earthquake which occurred yesterday, many homeowners are wondering whether or not damage which could have been caused to their home would be covered by their insurance policy. It is important to know that earthquake losses are a standard exclusion on home insurance policies. In order for a home to be covered for this type of loss, it is necessary that an Earthquake Coverage Endorsement be added to the policy. If a home suffers damage from a tremor/earthquake and the policy does not contain this endorsement, the claim will not be paid.
