Summer days are long

Hingham day planning for young families

As a mom to young children it seems imperative to keep things moving or all hell will break loose. My children are 4 and 2 and capable of damage that puts the bloods and crips to shame. If you turn your back  on the 2 year old even for a moment you can say goodbye to that cup of chocolate pudding as it's now all over the walls, or hello to permanent marker stains on the wood floors. As a result I have developed what I like to call defensive day planning. I will admit, it's not all for them, I need my time at the gym or I too will lose my marbles, but our days consist mainly of activities that will give them exercise (tire them out), allow for socialization (tire them out) and enrich their souls (tire them out) whenever possible.

This past weekend we had a Hingham kind of day, a day where I felt so truly lucky and blessed to live in this great community. We've lived in Liberty Pole for just over two years now and I have challenged myself to take part in at least one town activity per week. This is actually a pretty easy task since I'm the one who sets the parameters, but it can be as simple as visiting a town playground, or participating in a town event.

Saturday was our Hingham Day. We set out to the farmers market and we were all blown away by the fact that we live in a town where the farmers market is at the BEACH! Lucky. The free samples were great, the live music was festive and the assortment of goods being offered were astounding. From fresh produce to flowers to salsas and spreads and baked goods and coffee to Lobsters. Fantastic.

Then came the after-nap trip to the South Shore Country Club pool. It helped that the weather was unbelievable last weekend, but it felt like we had the pool pratically to ourselves.  We all got to cool off and even got to watch the 'big purple train' go to the station just down the hill. I thought my kids were going to explode they had so much fun.

Hingham is a town that is truly filled with amazing places, events, people and activities and I plan to try take advantage of as many of them as I can. Where are your favorite Hingham places? What do you like to do to keep your family busy? We're still new and always trying to find things to fill up our long summer days.
