Cardinal Cushing Centers to Return to Derby Street Shoppes

Student-Made Gifts on Sale this Holiday Season.

HANOVER, Mass. (December 11, 2014) – Continuing a holiday tradition, Cardinal Cushing Centers will be featured at the Derby Street Shoppes, 98 Derby Street in Hingham, this holiday season. This is the third year that hand-made gifts by the students and adults of Cardinal Cushing will be sold at Derby Street.

The pop-up shop will be located near the Kohl’s department store and REI specialty outdoor gear and clothing store, and will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. These products made by Cardinal Cushing Centers’ students and adults with intellectual disabilities will include jewelry, pottery, greeting cards, and special holiday items. This year we will also be featuring holiday themed gift baskets, filled with an assortment of handmade Cushing products and other items. Prices range from $2 to $55.

These types of efforts provide the Cardinal Cushing Centers’ students and adults with opportunities to practice good customer service skills. Students and adults foster pride with respect to their work and craftsmanship. Local residents have shown interest in their products and the sale of their work directly benefits the programs and services Cardinal Cushing Centers offers. The initiative provides a way for the Cushing Centers’ students and adults to give back to their own programs.

Residents and shoppers will have the opportunity to meet and interact with individuals with intellectual disabilities during the holiday shopping season. On December 18 our Cushing Chorus will be onsite singing favorite Christmas carols from noon to 2 p.m.

“We are thrilled that the Derby Street Shoppes welcomed us back again this season, giving us a chance to sell our student and adult-designed products,” says Cushing’s President/CEO, Jo Ann Simons. “Our students are excited to open up our shop again, and to share who we are and some of what we do with the South Shore Community. Partnerships with local organizations such as Derby Street are vital in sharing our mission, and we are thankful for the opportunities this long-standing relationship has provided and will continue to in the years to come.”
