Coronavirus: Face Mask Or A Fine For Hingham Essential Workers

The Hingham Board of Health ordered essential workers must wear masks within 6 feet of coworkers and while dealing with the public.

HINGHAM, MA —The Hingham Board of Health has imposed fines, and potential closing of businesses, for those who fail to wear protective face coverings while dealing with the public and when coming within 6 feet of coworkers. The order, which went into effect on Sunday, applies to all employees in grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies and other essential businesses covered in Gov. Charlie Baker's executive orders.

The fine will be $50 for the first offense, $150 for the second offense, $300 for the third offense and a possible closure of your business by the Hingham Board of Health.

The directive said that coverings must fit snugly, but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or loops and include multiple layers of fabric. They must also be able to be laundered without damaging the size or shape.

The Board of Health advised not to wear medical or surgical masks that it said should be reserved for health care workers and first responders. It is also up to businesses in town to enforce social distancing among members of the public in the establish and post signs regarding social distancing.
