Hingham voters agreed to install a new sewer lines on Ship Street and Cottage Street at last night’s Town Meeting.

The project will cost $600,000 which will be paid for by the 30 homes and 31 properties in the Cottage and Ship Street neighborhood over a 20 year period.

The project will  have no impact on town finances, town resources, and will not affect any future projects for the sewer commission.

The 70 percent of Cottage and Ship Street  residents in favor of the project  said they needed a new system because of an aging septic system.

Cottage Street resident Victoria Warnet said there is a failing cesspool in her front yard and it floods every time her family has an overload of laundry or when her two family members take showers at the same time.

“It’s for good of entire street,” she said “It will benefit everyone.”

Elizabeth Eldridge of the Hingham Advisory Committee was against the project as she was concerned for some of the Ship and Cottage Street residents who could not afford the project.

“This project is a want, not a need, ” she said. Neighbors who need it should pay for it on their own, she told the town.

Ship Street resident Tom Patch agreed.

“Those who want it aren’t being fair,” Patch said. “We are reaching into the pockets of our neighbors.”

Despite the length discussion, residents at Town Meeting voted in favor of the new sewer system which will now be installed on both Cottage and Ship Street.
