Police are investigating a dog that was shot and killed by a pellet gun in a Hingham backyard on Thursday.
Police say the owner of 7-year-old Australian Cattle and German Sheppard mix was working on his parent’s home on Chamberlain Run and let his dog out to run around the yard. At around 2:30 p.m. the owner found the dog in the backyard with some type of puncture wound and contacted police.
The dog was taken to the South Shore VCA in Weymouth by the Hingham Animal Control Officer for x-rays, police said. X-rays showed an “unknown type of projectile” inside the dog, police said.
