Eric Greitens, award-winning author, veteran and humanitarian, to speak on "Resilience in Children and Adults"

Eric Greitens, New York Times best-selling author, former Navy SEAL and founder of The Mission Continues for wounded veterans, will speak about “The Importance of Resilience in Children and Adults” on Thursday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Inly School. The author will also be on hand to sign copies of his book Resilience: Hard Won Wisdom for Living a Better Life, available for purchase at the event from Buttonwood Books. Part of the Omran ♦ Nelson Speaker Series, this talk is open to the public. Tickets are $10 each and available for online purchase on the Inly School Speaker Series page. About Eric Greitens: Humanitarian, former Navy SEAL, current candidate for Governor of Missouri
Named to TIME magazine’s 2013 list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” and Fortune’s 2014 list of the “World’s 50 Greatest Leaders,” Eric Greitens is widely recognized for his humanitarian and military service. As a Navy SEAL officer he deployed four times, to Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa and Southeast Asia and served as the commander of a Joint Special Operations Task Unit and an al Qaeda Targeting Cell. After returning from Iraq, Greitens donated his combat pay and founded The Mission Continues, which empowers wounded veterans to serve and lead in communities across America. For his work, he received the President’s Volunteer Service Award.

Recently appointed as a White House fellow, Greitens teaches public service at the Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri and at the Olin School of Business at Washington University. He is currently seeking election as the Missouri state governor.

About the talk: “The Importance of Resilience in Children and Adults”
Focusing on the relationship between failure, setbacks, challenge and growth, Greitens will discuss the importance of developing critically self-reflective children and explain the role parents can play by allowing them more autonomy.

The idea that failure leads to resilience is not a new one, but it’s an important one in the context of today’s parenting styles. “Eric’s message is that it’s okay to fail and okay to have bumps in the road and we shouldn’t solve those bumps for our children, “ says Donna Milani Luther, Inly Head of School. “We should help them learn to pick themselves up and brush them off.”

The relationship between failure and growth is also relevant in studies on creativity and innovation. “The importance of risk-taking should not be underestimated,” says Luther. “Taking creative risks in the classroom, lab, studio or out in the field leads to creative thinking and persistence as students try and try again without fear of failure.”
