Harborwomen Drown Lakers as Girls Lacrosse Cruises to Victory

The Hingham High girls lacrosse team dominated Silver Lake 16-2.

’s coaching debut for the girls’ lacrosse team was certainly one to remember for the ages.

Hanna Krueger, Meghan Doherty, Emma Marjollet, Maggie Watson and Ali Burns each scored two goals apiece as the Harborwomen cruised to a 16-2 win over Silver Lake Regional in yesterday’s season opener at . With the win, the Harborwomen improve to 1-0 overall and will face-off against Hopkinton on Monday.

“We still have to improve on some things, but overall I was very happy with the way the girls performed,’’ said Creedon. “The girls came out with a lot of intensity, and we were able to sustain that throughout the whole game. Even when we got out to a big lead, the girls were still focused and we were able to work out some of the kinks.”

Early in the contest, the Harborwomen grabbed a quick 2-0 lead. On a breakaway opportunity, Burns whisked through a pair of defenders and rifled a shot past Laker goalkeeper Crystal Desrosiers for the 1-0 lead. Seconds later, the Harborwomen struck again for the 2-0 lead. On the ensuing face-off, Chrissy Coveney weaved through a defender, muscled in all alone and whisked a low shot past Desrosier for the two goal lead.

Throughout the next 10 minutes, the Harborwomen continued to capitalize on multiple scoring opportunities, maneuvering through multiple defenders at will and cashing in on quality chances. After Sarah Fisher’s goal increased the lead to 3-0, goals by Julia Leahy, Sally Long and Marjollet followed the Harborwomen paved the way for a commanding 6-0 edge.

“Considering that it was the first game of the season, I was very pleased with the way the girls were moving the ball around,’’ said Creedon. “We were creating crisp, sound passes and our throwing and catching was on target. The girls have worked very hard in the pre-season and they were able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.”

As the Harborwomen continued to slice apart the Lakers’ defense, goals by Watson and Krueger extended the lead to 9-0.

Doherty’s second goal of the game, scoring off a cross increased the lead to 10-0 before Watson added another goal en route to a commanding 11-0 edge.

“Our midfielders were outstanding in moving the ball downfield,’’ said Creedon. “They were able to get the ball efficiently to our attack, and they were able to make some nice moves to the goal. It’s still early in the season, but the girls did a nice job challenging each other on the field and executing on shots.”

With a commanding 11-0 lead in hand, the Harborwomen’s bid for a shutout ended early in the second half as Kayla Heath scored off a pass from Daisy Wolfrum.

Seconds later, the Harborwomen regained momentum and increased the lead to 12-1 as Caroline Bailey waltzed in all alone. Minutes later, Marjollet connected off a feed from Sarah Fisher as the Harborwomen eased to a 13-1 edge.

With the game well in hand, the Harborwomen’s scoring attack continued as goals by Krueger, Julia Leahy and Burns increased the lead to 16-2.

“It was nice that we were able to pretty much dictate the tempo of the game from start to finish,’’ said Creedon. “We were able to settle into a groove and really dictate the tempo of the game.”

Defensively, goalkeeper Alison Argiro saw little action throughout the contest, stopping only four shots en route to the win.

“We did a great job defensively in our own end,’’ said Creedon. “Overall, it was a great team effort, and we are hoping to build some momentum from this win.”

As for Creedon herself, she managed to savor her first ever varsity win as the coach of the Hingham High girls’ lacrosse program.

“It’s a great way to start the season,’’ said Creedon. “The girls are so motivated and hard working and they’ve made my job a lot easier. We’ve been setting our systems and philosophies in place and the girls are buying into it. They are such a great group to coach.”
