Hingham 2012 Election Guide: Selectman

A look at the three candidates running for the open selectman seat. The election is Saturday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Candidates:

John A. Riley   16 East Street

Bernard Manning   59 Cushing Street

Irma Lauter   12 Liberty Road

John A. Riley 

John A. Riley of East Street is currently the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen and will run for reelection.  Riley has been a Hingham Selectman for six years and is currently serving his second term.  In the past he has served on the Planning Board for 21 years.

Riley has lived in Hingham his entire life and is a Hingham High School graduate and member of F. Riley Construction Co., a family business. 

“I have infinite knowledge of the town, the people, its infrastructure, and its need, ” he said.

Riley said the most important issue in town is its affordability.  He said the selectmen have focused on directing property tax relief  to help pay for town expenses.

Bernard Manning 

Bernard Manning of Cushing Street holds a  bachelor’s degree, a master's degree, and CAGS from Boston University. He holds law degrees from Suffolk University. Manning served as an Assistant Attorney General and served as the Deputy Chief of the Massachusetts Criminal Bureau.

He  has also served as a special agent counter intelligence assigned to the Philadelphia Field Office.  Manning has taught English and Geography at Quincy Point Junior High School and taught Constitutional Law and the Legislative Process at Northeastern University.

Manning is  worried about the town’s affordability.

“This town needs to be straightened out and I have the background to do it,” he said.

Irma Lauter  

Irma Lauter of  Liberty Road is running for selectmen because she want to give back to the town she loves. Lauter is a member of Government Study Committee and in the past she has been a  member of the Advisory Committee for six years. She has her BS in systems engineering from the University of Florida; an MS in engineering management from Northeastern University.

She is focused on the affordability of living in town.

“I am committed to working to oppress the cost of living in Hingham through prudent fiscal management, generation of new revenues, and bringing business to Hingham,” she said. 

Lauter said she is very accessible and can be found all over town.
