Hingham Beaches Reopen
Kimball, Belair and North Hingham Beaches were all reopened over the weekend.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has reopened three Hingham Beaches that were closed last week due to concerns over water quality.
Kimball, Belair and North Hingham Beaches were all reopened this past weekend after they were closed on August 3 for having a high rate of bacteria.
The water at marine beaches, like the ones in Hingham, is tested for the presence of Enterococci. Enterococci are a group of bacterial species within the Streptococcus genus, some of which are typically found in human and animal intestines and are therefore present in sewage. These tests are also referred to as indicator organisms.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Hingham residents can help reduce contamination and pollution by using natural substances like compost to fertilize gardens and lawns, by not pouring anything in storm drains, and by disposing of boat sewage in onshore sanitary facilities instead of dumping it into the water.
When beaches are closed, residents should avoid using them. Swimming in polluted water can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
